Thank you for making Our End of the Season Benefit a Success!

On the night of September 17th the Creek Beach Club was hopping with supporters of the Oyster Bay Main Street Association as sponsors, guests, and board members got together for the Association's second End of the Season Benefit.  The benefit - organized by board members Tracy Dellomo, John Bonifacio, Henry Clark, Kyle Piechucki and Alex Urdea with support from Executive Director Meredith Maus - sought to raise funds for OBMSA's programs and initiatives in the year to come.

In his welcome to the crowd, the President of OBMSA, John Bonifacio, highlighted some past initiatives of the organization including the design, purchase, and installation of 120 new street signs for the downtown; beautification efforts including the purchase of 16 new street lamps for South Street; and our successful advocacy and fundraising for the preservation of the Trousdell House.  After thanking the crowd for their support he highlighted some new initiatives the organization is trying to fund, including: 

• hiring an individual to pick up loose debris in the downtown to combat the growing problem of garbage;
• incorporating new neighborhoods and streets with a second wave of our newly designed street signs; and
• continuing to advocate for historic buildings in the downtown, with a specific focus on the Mill Pond House and Snouder's Corner Drug Store.

We cannot thank all of our supporters enough - for those who were able to join us and those who sent their well wishes.

Sundown Brings Live Music to Oyster Bay, 1st Thursdays, June to September

The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is excited to announce the line-up for its third “SUNDOWN” Concert Series. Eagerly awaited by residents who enjoyed it the last two years, this year’s entertainment promises to be even more fabulous! Diane Meltzer, Chair of the OBMSA Promotion Committee, said “we are thrilled to be bringing live music to the downtown area for a third year of warm weather outdoor concerts.”

Once again, the acts will coincide with Oyster Bay’s “First Thursday” Art Walk, adding another option for residents and visitors enjoying the gallery exhibits, restaurant specials and general bonhomie on those evenings. SUNDOWN concerts are FREE for everyone, and chairs are provided for your listening pleasure. All concerts are from 7 – 9 p.m. in the evening, and each month will feature something different. Following is a list of this year’s musicians:



June 2— “Johnny Q” electrifies the evening with an eclectic musical journey including everything from Elvis Costello to Bob Dylan. The trio on violin, bass, and drums will put a unique personal twist on favorite songs. — Renaissance Plaza, 24 Audrey Avenue

July 7— “Scofflaws” ska/reggae/R & B are “so hip it’s ridiculous.” Established in 1988, they are based on Long Island but have toured the states extensively doing live gigs. August 4—“Jack Morelli’s Jazz Duo” delivers a swinging evening under the stars.” Enjoy classic jazz, blues, and songs from the Great American Songbook. Art Rome, on keyboard and vocals, is a master of improvisation and has played on Broadway. Jack Morelli is one of the top drummers anywhere. — Renaissance Plaza, 24 Audrey Avenue

September 1 — “Flashback” has you dancing and singing to the Golden Oldies of the 60’s – 90’s. Long Island’s own “Village People”: retired senior training captain for the NYC Department of Corrections on rhythm guitar/ vocals; several incredible musicians/electricians on guitar/ drums/vocals! Sagamore Hill Presents Public Programs on July 22 & 23

Oyster Bay, New York - Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, the home of Theodore Roosevelt in Oyster Bay, Long Island, will present the Oyster Bay Community Band along with an appearance from Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote on Thursday, July 22nd from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a rain date on Friday, July 23rd. Under the direction of Stephen Walker, the band will perform traditional American music such as marches. This event is free and open to all.

The first floor of Theodore Roosevelt’s Home will be open for visitation. People are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs to sit on the lawn. There will be no food concessions available, but please feel free to bring your own snacks to the event.

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, located at 12 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, New York, is a unit of the National Park Service. The site was established by Congress in 1962 to preserve and interpret the structures, landscape, collections and other cultural resources associated with Theodore Roosevelt’s home in Oyster Bay, New York, and to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, his family and the significant events associated with him. July 1st will herald the Independence Day weekend with the jazzy return of John Bruschini and Dale Kleps as the “Downtown Earth Duo;” this time playing electric guitar and tenor saxophone, respectively. This concert will take place at Renaissance Plaza, in the courtyard on Audrey Avenue behind Chrison & Bellina at 24 Audrey Avenue. Main Street and Partners Planning to Transform Audrey Avenue Extension, June 12-13

Audrey Avenue Extension to be transformed June 12-13 during 48x48x48

The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is pleased to announce that downtown Oyster Bay has been selected as the site for a downtown improvement project. DoTank:Brooklyn is a well-regarded national consortium of planners, designers, and architects whose members come from the Project for Public Spaces, Street Plans Collaborative, and other NYC-based planning, design, and architecture firms. They will be providing their services for free over a two-day period to help transform a portion of Audrey Avenue Extension in downtown Oyster Bay.

This group will work with local leaders and individuals to lead a short-term planning exercise on June 12-13, 2010. Supervisor John Venditto has been very accommodating of the initiative providing full support from the Town of Oyster Bay for these efforts. Improvements made during these 48 hours will help to build support for plans and actions over the next 48 months, that will ultimately help to bring sustainable design and lasting improvements for the next 48 years.

Main Street President Ellen Roché speaking of the event said, “This highly visible high-impact event will provide the Oyster Bay community an opportunity to actively get involved in revitalization efforts. We hope this event will serve as a catalyst attracting interest and attention that will in turn help to attract resources for future improvements.”

Some activities and events being planned are the creation of a “pop-up park” on Railroad Avenue, demonstrating the potential of a future Railroad Plaza project. A farmer’s market will be created in Municipal Lot #0-8 on Audrey Avenue just north of Town Hall West. Special workshops, classes, demonstrations, and events will be held for people of all ages. These activities will be especially focused on how, by working together, we can improve downtown Oyster Bay and other places like it.

Oyster Bay Sundown Concerts on First Thursdays at Renaissance Plaza

TR and the Trail opens at TRA Gallery June 3

TR and the Trail continues the series of art exhibitions featured in TRA Gallery, the beautiful gallery space inside the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s headquarters at 20 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. The upcoming exhibition, opening 3 June in conjunction with Sundown Oyster Bay and the First Thursdays Artwalk, presents artists from Connecticut and Pound Ridge, New York, as well as prominent Long Island artists.

Exhibiting artists include Sandra Benny, whose color pencil drawings evoke the delicacy and detail of flowers and feathers; James Foote, painter and Theodore Roosevelt interpreter; Hanneke Goedkoop, a master printer who finds inspiration in her Dutch heritage; Kendall Klingbeil, a painter regularly featured in the New York Times; Puneeta Mittal, a ceramicist whose Of the Earth series reminds us of the "preciousness of the everlasting material, clay, used to inform and educate us;” Franklin Hill Perrell, former chief curator of the Nassau County Museum of Art and longtime practicing painter; and Elizabeth Roosevelt, whose photographs range in subject from Oyster Bay to the farthest reaches of the globe.

TRA Gallery is committed to exhibiting the work of contemporary artists who interpret the passions of Theodore Roosevelt’s many-sided life. Following the enthusiastic response to last summer’s “SUNDOWN” Concert Series, the Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) is ready to roll out the musical red carpet for this year’s events. An exciting and varied mix is planned. Diane Meltzer, Chair of the OBMSA Promotion Committee, said “we are thrilled to be bringing live music to the downtown area for a second year of warm weather outdoor concerts.”

The main focus will be on the “First Thursday” of each month, 7-9 p.m., from May through September. To enhance the Art Walks that are already in place on “First Thursdays”--with their wonderful gallery exhibits, wine tastings, restaurant specials, and general bonhomie--live outdoor music will add another option for residents’ and visitors’ entertainment.

Each month will feature something different. The season kicks off on May 6th at the Teaching Studios of Art, 115 Audrey Avenue, where the OBMSA will host a get-together open to the public, which will coincide with the Studios’ new registration period. In an acoustic setting, John Bruschini’s nylon string guitar and Dale Kleps’ flute and reeds will present fresh interpretations of traditional jazz and classical music, mainly from Argentina, Brazil, and the U.S. The sound will compliment the classical art being taught and on display. Main Street Strategic Planning Completed
During the second weekend in April, Main Street board members and community partners came together to conduct a strategic planning exercise. This resulted in a new mission statement, vision statement, and strategic goals for the organization. The mission statement is: "Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) is dedicated to enhancing and promoting an attractive and thriving downtown, while maintaining its historic integrity. We are a 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit using the national Main Street™ Approach to downtown revitalization. " The vision statement is: "

The inviting gateways to Oyster Bay, including the waterfront, Route 106, and the Long Island Railroad, lead to an aesthetically pleasing historic downtown. Visitors and residents alike are impressed by the artistic and cultural attractions, including appealing diverse restaurants and shops. The Chocolate Lady to Provide Cake Decorating Workshop

Oyster Bay's very own Master Pastry Chef/Chocolatier Lee Perrotta of The Chocolate Lady will show you how to hone your skills so that you too can decorate a cake or cupcakes like a pro! Learn how to level a cake, frost with no crumbs and get a smooth top, and to pipe borders, shells, stars. Special techniques will also be taught like how to pipe a clown, create roses and even a basket of flowers cake. A certificate will be provided upon completion. A beginners kit will also be provided on the first night as well as recipes annd a list of additional items to purchase. The class will be on Thursday night from 7-9pm for 4 weeks starting on May 6. Yoga Rocks Oyster Bay Re-launches as Bliss Studio

Bliss Studio, formerly Yoga Rocks Oyster Bay, is proud to announce it’s new name, new look, and exciting new offers. The studio will continue to:

“Provide our clients with exceptional service in promoting wellness of body, mind and spirit through excellence in instruction and program diversity in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.”

In addition to the outstanding Yoga classes for which they are known, Bliss Studio has also introduced the popular dance based fitness program called Zumba. The classes are exciting, fast paced, and fun with outstanding Latin and international music. A Zumba workout combines fast and slow rhythms and resistance training to tone the muscles and burn fat.

The studio's biggest new addition is their Ballroom Dance Program. Instructed by Austrian National Champion 2005 and European World Latin Quarter Finalist Vladimir Velev, the program includes both Latin and Smooth dancing styles for social dancing and competition. There is a Group Class every Friday night at 6:30pm that is open to the public for $20 per person or $35 per couple. OBMSA Member Meeting at Oakcliff Sailing Center Well Attended
Nearly 50 people came out for the Main Street Member Meeting on April 15, at Oakcliff Sailing Center. The meeting began with an introduction by Main Street President Ellen Roché, where she announced the formation of an Advisory Board comprised of community leaders. An overview of work Main Street has done over the past six months was provided by Executive Director Isaac Kremer. Highlights included formation of the Advisory Board, applying for several competitive grants, and implementing the New York Main Street grant that was received. Special events included the Winter Wellness Week in January and the upcoming Oyster Bay Sundown series. Invited guest speakers were David Waldo with The WaterFront Center and Dawn Riley, Executive Director of the Oakcliff Sailing Center who both spoke about work of their respective organizations. Refreshments were provided for the evening, compliments of The Chocolate Lady.

Teaching Studios of Art Announces Sundown Concert and Spring Registration Drive

On Thursday, May 6th, the Teaching Studios of Art will be joining forces with Oyster Bay Main Street Association to host their Sundown Series Kick-Off party. Normally held at an outdoor venue, this party will be in our art studio/classrooms and feature an art show of student and faculty work, as well as the live musical performances of John Bruschini’s nylon string guitar and Dale Kleps’ flute. Light food and drinks will also be served.

Faculty will be available for discussion of their respective courses, and students may register for next session throughout the event.

We are in the middle of our registration drive for Spring Session 2.

Both faculty and student artwork will be on display during the Sundown event.

We invite you to join us and pursue your artistic growth with some of the New York region's most talented and dedicated faculty. At our school, you will find a program that is rooted in classical training, and is unpretentious in approach.Our students range from the absolute beginner to the more advanced.

Bennett's Back Outside

Plein Air Landscape Painting Techniques
Bennett Vadnais, Instructor

In this class, students will learn how to render a landscape, starting from its simplest elements and proceeding to finer details and relationships. These will include understanding values, color relationships, perspective, drawing, and different ways of handling pigment. During this course,students will first learn about basic color mixing strategies and different qualities of oil paint and/or acrylics.

Portraiture
Kristin Kunc and Rob Zeller continue to offer two very different, but compatible approaches in Portrait instruction. Rob offers a more anatomical approach, and Kristin a more painterly touch. All model poses last for 7 weeks at the Teaching Studios of Art.

Illustration
Renowned illustrator Susan Gaber joins our staff this session. She has worked as a freelance illustrator at Newsday for 10 years and has illustrated over 24 published books. She will teach Introduction to Illustration on Monday evenings, 6:00pm - 9:00pm. This class will cover the very basics of Illustration in various media: pen and ink, acrylics, and watercolor. If you are trying to build a portfolio of work to pursue a career in Illustration, or simply want to try your hand at the medium, this is a chance to work with a experienced professional.

Children's Classes

This session, we are once again conducting classes for younger artists on Saturday mornings.
Our curriculum focuses on teaching students how to see the basic shapes that make up almost any form. Students then learn how to build more intricate drawings using those shapes. Basic principles of color will be taught, as well. The idea is to set the stage for participation in our more advanced young adult/portfolio class.

July 1st will herald the Independence Day weekend with the jazzy return of John Bruschini and Dale Kleps as the “Downtown Earth Duo;” this time playing electric guitar and tenor saxophone, respectively.

Bruschini’s compositions will combine improvisation and spontaneity into 20th century jazz tunes and 21st century hot numbers.

August 5th is the date for “Acoustifunk.” This dynamic acoustic duo—Matt Sweeney and Greg Romano singing and playing guitar—present their unique take on classics by the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye, and others. The audience just might turn the courtyard into a dance floor!

September 2nd concludes the series with a bang! The Homestead outdoor patio, 107 South Street—site of last summer’s “Judy Garland Revue”—this summer will be the site for singing sensation Don Anthony and his Songs of the Stars. Reserve a table for dinner or just sit on a lounge and order a drink, while this professional entertainer wows the ladies (and the gents) with his renditions of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Bobby Darin, Elvis, and who knows who else?! He’s played everywhere except Vegas—so far—and now The Homestead!!

Oyster Bay is the Place To Be this Spring and Summer!

New York Main Street Grant
Since receiving a grant from the New York Main Street Grant program of the NYS Office of Community Renewal, we have invested $200,000 in five projects. Goals of this program include taking actions to prevent dangers to public health and safety, to preserve historic properties in danger of being lost, to reduce blight and contribute to the economic recovery of the area, and to improve properties with a residential component. The Brower House rehab at 39-41 East Main Street, and Fiddleheads restaurant expansion are underway. Other projects include adding signs, awning, and lighting to the North Shore Bank Building (Coin Galleries of Oyster Bay) at 90 South Street, renovation of the Townsend Inn Annex (9 Audrey Avenue), and tuck-pointing of the building at 63 Audrey Avenue now housing Shangri La Spa.

These projects build on the success of recent efforts to restore the Octagon Hotel. This building at Spring and West Main Streets is rapidly nearing completion, and will have 6 apartments and 3 retail units when finished.

Main Street Member Meeting at Oakcliff Sailing Center on April 15
Recently a non-profit organization was formed to train the next generation of competitive sailors in the U.S. The headquarters of this organization are at 4 South Street, just north of the downtown area. There will be a Main Street Member Meeting on April 15, from 7-9pm at Oakcliff Sailing Center. Their new director will be present to share more about the work of the organization. David Waldo, Executive Director of The WaterFront Center will also be on hand to discuss some of the work WFC is doing.

Preserve America Grant

Presently Oyster Bay is being considered for a $250,000 grant from the Preserve America program of the National Parks Service to go towards a $500,000 project. This would allow us to improve existing signage and to add new way-finding and interpretive signage downtown, and to produce a website and brochure promoting Oyster Bay. Partners in this effort include the Town of Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District, and the Long Island North Shore Heritage Area. We should know by early summer whether these funds are awarded.

Beautification Cocktail Fundraiser on April 19
A cocktail fundraiser with food tasting from local restaurants will be held Monday, April 19, 2010 at Dodds & Eder (221 South Street). Proceeds from the event which costs $65 per person, will go towards efforts to beautify downtown Oyster Bay. The fundraiser is being organized by the Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce. Oyster Bay Sundown
A live music series is being planned again for downtown Oyster Bay. Three restaurants: Canterbury’s, Fiddleheads, and The Homestead are all arranging to have live music every Thursday night. Live outdoor music will be provided the 1st Thursday of each month at Renaissance Plaza (24 Audrey Avenue) on June 3, July 1, & August 5, from 7-9pm each night. The kick-off for Oyster Bay Sundown will be held on May 3 at the Teaching Studios of Art to coincide with their spring registration drive. The last concert will be September 2 at The Homestead. These concerts are free and open to the public.

Historic Oyster Bay will be your musical destination this coming Thursday, August 6, from 6pm to 8pm, and Il Piatto Restaurant will be your stage for the Judy Garland Revue as part of the ongoing Oyster Bay Sundown series held every Thursday night


The trio of Jen Kane, Lisa Berman, and Dawn Klein will present the life of Judy Garland through song.

Jen Kane describes herself as a lifelong fan of Judy Garland, even as a young child. Past credits include Meet me In St. Louis, Pippin, Swing and Anything Goes.

Dawn Klein teaches fourth grade at the American Sign Language and English Lower School in Manhattan and dance at Dance Dimensions in Hicksville. She too has performed in productions of Anything Goes, Hello Dolly, and Gypsy.

Finally, Lisa Berman performs in everything from children’s shows to plays to big musicals. She too is delighted to perform the Garland repertoire.

Sundown Brings Activity to Oyster Bay this Spring and Summer

Every Tuesday and Thursday night Oyster Bay will be abuzz during the spring and summer months.

Live performances and events will make up the Oyster Bay Sundown Series. These weekly happenings will be every Thursday night from 6pm to 8pm.

“Programming these live events will entice people to visit downtown, which is our goal,” said Diane Meltzer, the Oyster Bay Main Street Association’s Promotion Chair.


The Acts
Throughout the summer, the series will shift from the downtown to a variety of venues in and around Oyster Bay, highlighting the unique historical and cultural attractions in the area. Concertgoers are welcome to bring a blanket and a picnic to enjoy these live concerts in an enjoyable setting each week.
