New Children's Classes for 2 Age Groups

Our Classical Art Lessons for Children program takes young artists seriously. In fact, the program we put them through is just as rigorous and thorough as the one we have created for our adult students. But it's much more fun!

The Children’s program at Teaching Studios offers young artists an opportunity to study traditional drawing and painting techniques using graphite, charcoal and oil paints. Young artists begin with learning a step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of drawing and painting. They begin by learning concepts such as value, form, line, composition during the drawing program. Students move onto painting when ready, working on still-life, then landscape and finally, portrait. A fun and supportive classroom atmosphere is cultivated.

Instructor Leeanna Chipana has been working with young artists for almost 10 years in the North Shore area and developed Long Island’s first classical youth program. She’s developed a unique curriculum specifically designed for children. She has been joined by experienced instructors Anne Gunthner and Abigail Tullis, as the program has grown and we have added more classes for younger artists. This program provides a great opportunity for young artists to begin to build skills. It is ideal for the attention span of a mature child as classes run 2 hours long.

Plein Air Competition at Sagamore Hill NHS, September 9 and 10, 2011

Plein Air Competition at Sagamore Hill September 9 & 10

Teaching Studios 1st Annual Plein Air Competition is being held at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in Oyster Bay, New York - a setting with over 83 acres of beautiful landscape, as well as the last home of Theodore Roosevelt, a 23 room Victorian structure of frame and brick.

The historic site is located on the beautiful Gold Coast of northern Long Island.
Entry is by application only, and is limited to a selection of 35 artists. We seek to assemble the best 35 Plein Air painters possible, in one location, and let beautiful paintings happen. There will be several awards given out for those who make paintings of distinction.

There is a non-refundable $35 application fee.

EXHIBITION
Selected works will be exhibited at the Oyster Bay Historical Society, in their new art gallery at the Koenig Center. There will be an artist’s reception and an awards ceremony on Saturday September 10, from 7-9pm. Work will be made available for sale, with a percentage of proceeds going to benefit the Historical Society.

ABOUT THE JURORS
Bennett Vadnais studied classical drawing and painting at the Bougie Studio, MN, the Water Street Atelier, NY, and the Art Students League of New York. He has won two of the most prestigious awards that the Art Students League of New York grants its members: the McDowell Travel Grant and the Xavier Gonzalez Travel Grant. Vadnais has done various landscape workshops around Long Island and New York City, and has earned a reputation for excellence in teaching. Before joining the Teaching Studios, he previously taught at the Long Island Academy of Fine Art. He has exhibited in galleries in New York City and nationally. He was recently profiled in the Fall 2010 issue of American Artist Workshop magazine.

Jane McGraw-Teubner has achieved the honored rank of Master Pastel Artist, awarded by the Pastel Society of America. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art
Club and a Resident Artist in the Salmagundi Art Club in Manhattan. She studied with pastel artists Jeff Webb, Frank Federico, Albert Handell, Anita Louise West, Larry Blovits, Richard McKinley and at the Art Students League with Richard Pionk. She exhibits in galleries in New York City and the metropolitan area. She teaches pastel painting for the Teaching Studios of Art.

Live Demonstrations

Utrecht Artist-in-Residence Joe Gyurcsak will be doing a plein air demonstration on day 2 of the event. Saturday, September 10, 11am-2pm. Free and open to the public.
Rob Zeller, Bennett Vadnais and Jane McGraw-Teubner will all be painting during the event, as well, (for enjoyment and not for competition).

Friday September 9

Check in at parking lot of Sagamore Hill.
Canvases checked and stamped. Maximum size: 16 x 20
Promotional supplies from American Artist Magazine will be distributed to each artist (yes, goodies for everyone). Use of these materials during the competition is optional. American Artist would like feedback from anyone who uses the materials during the competition, though.
Artists are free to paint anywhere on the preserve. Please budget enough time to get where you are going. This is a very large preserve. To reach the coastal area can take up to a 15-20 minute hike.
Park closes at dusk, but artists are asked to leave by 5pm.

Oyster Bay Sundown with Downtown Earth Duo, July 1, 7-9pm, Oyster Bay

July 1st will herald the Independence Day weekend with the jazzy return of John Bruschini and Dale Kleps as the “Downtown Earth Duo;” this time playing electric guitar and tenor saxophone, respectively. This concert will take place at Renaissance Plaza, in the courtyard on Audrey Avenue behind Chrison & Bellina at 24 Audrey Avenue. Main Street and Partners Planning to Transform Audrey Avenue Extension, June 12-13

Audrey Avenue Extension to be transformed June 12-13 during 48x48x48

The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is pleased to announce that downtown Oyster Bay has been selected as the site for a downtown improvement project. DoTank:Brooklyn is a well-regarded national consortium of planners, designers, and architects whose members come from the Project for Public Spaces, Street Plans Collaborative, and other NYC-based planning, design, and architecture firms. They will be providing their services for free over a two-day period to help transform a portion of Audrey Avenue Extension in downtown Oyster Bay.

This group will work with local leaders and individuals to lead a short-term planning exercise on June 12-13, 2010. Supervisor John Venditto has been very accommodating of the initiative providing full support from the Town of Oyster Bay for these efforts. Improvements made during these 48 hours will help to build support for plans and actions over the next 48 months, that will ultimately help to bring sustainable design and lasting improvements for the next 48 years.

Main Street President Ellen Roché speaking of the event said, “This highly visible high-impact event will provide the Oyster Bay community an opportunity to actively get involved in revitalization efforts. We hope this event will serve as a catalyst attracting interest and attention that will in turn help to attract resources for future improvements.”

Some activities and events being planned are the creation of a “pop-up park” on Railroad Avenue, demonstrating the potential of a future Railroad Plaza project. A farmer’s market will be created in Municipal Lot #0-8 on Audrey Avenue just north of Town Hall West. Special workshops, classes, demonstrations, and events will be held for people of all ages. These activities will be especially focused on how, by working together, we can improve downtown Oyster Bay and other places like it.

Oyster Bay Sundown Concerts on First Thursdays at Renaissance Plaza

Thank you for everyone who came out and helped to make our first Oyster Bay Sundown concert at Teaching Studios of Art such a success. Over a hundred people came out for an evening of socializing, entertainment, food and wine (compliments of Fiddleheads).

June 3rd will showcase Tom Licameli, a guitarist and songwriter of the Indie rock band “Knockout Drops” from New York City, and producer of their 2005 rock n’ roll theatre show Escape from Bellevue. For Oyster Bay, Tom will deliver a solo acoustic act of rock n’ roll classics, Beatles favorites, the Who, the Byrds, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Radiohead, and other contemporary greats. The June 3rd, July 1st, and August 5th concerts will take place at Renaissance Plaza, in the courtyard on Audrey Avenue behind Chrison & Bellina at 24 Audrey Avenue. TR and the Trail opens at TRA Gallery June 3

TR and the Trail continues the series of art exhibitions featured in TRA Gallery, the beautiful gallery space inside the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s headquarters at 20 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. The upcoming exhibition, opening 3 June in conjunction with Sundown Oyster Bay and the First Thursdays Artwalk, presents artists from Connecticut and Pound Ridge, New York, as well as prominent Long Island artists.

Exhibiting artists include Sandra Benny, whose color pencil drawings evoke the delicacy and detail of flowers and feathers; James Foote, painter and Theodore Roosevelt interpreter; Hanneke Goedkoop, a master printer who finds inspiration in her Dutch heritage; Kendall Klingbeil, a painter regularly featured in the New York Times; Puneeta Mittal, a ceramicist whose Of the Earth series reminds us of the "preciousness of the everlasting material, clay, used to inform and educate us;” Franklin Hill Perrell, former chief curator of the Nassau County Museum of Art and longtime practicing painter; and Elizabeth Roosevelt, whose photographs range in subject from Oyster Bay to the farthest reaches of the globe.

Downtown Oyster Bay Comes to Life with Music and Art in May!

Oyster Bay Sundown Concerts Start May 6

Downtown Oyster Bay will again be the place to hear and enjoy live music this summer. Following the enthusiastic response to last summer’s “SUNDOWN” Concert Series, the Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) is ready to roll out the musical red carpet for this year’s events. An exciting and varied mix is planned. Diane Meltzer, Chair of the OBMSA Promotion Committee, said “we are thrilled to be bringing live music to the downtown area for a second year of warm weather outdoor concerts.”

The main focus will be on the “First Thursday” of each month, 7-9 p.m., from May through September. To enhance the Art Walks that are already in place on “First Thursdays”--with their wonderful gallery exhibits, wine tastings, restaurant specials, and general bonhomie--live outdoor music will add another option for residents’ and visitors’ entertainment.

Each month will feature something different. The season kicks off on May 6th at the Teaching Studios of Art, 115 Audrey Avenue, where the OBMSA will host a get-together open to the public, which will coincide with the Studios’ new registration period. In an acoustic setting, John Bruschini’s nylon string guitar and Dale Kleps’ flute and reeds will present fresh interpretations of traditional jazz and classical music, mainly from Argentina, Brazil, and the U.S. The sound will compliment the classical art being taught and on display. Refreshments and drinks will be served.

Main Street Strategic Planning Completed
During the second weekend in April, Main Street board members and community partners came together to conduct a strategic planning exercise. This resulted in a new mission statement, vision statement, and strategic goals for the organization. The mission statement is: "Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) is dedicated to enhancing and promoting an attractive and thriving downtown, while maintaining its historic integrity. We are a 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit using the national Main Street™ Approach to downtown revitalization. " The vision statement is: "

The Chocolate Lady to Provide Cake Decorating Workshop

Oyster Bay's very own Master Pastry Chef/Chocolatier Lee Perrotta of The Chocolate Lady will show you how to hone your skills so that you too can decorate a cake or cupcakes like a pro! Learn how to level a cake, frost with no crumbs and get a smooth top, and to pipe borders, shells, stars. Special techniques will also be taught like how to pipe a clown, create roses and even a basket of flowers cake. A certificate will be provided upon completion. A beginners kit will also be provided on the first night as well as recipes annd a list of additional items to purchase. The class will be on Thursday night from 7-9pm for 4 weeks starting on May 6. Yoga Rocks Oyster Bay Re-launches as Bliss Studio

Bliss Studio, formerly Yoga Rocks Oyster Bay, is proud to announce it’s new name, new look, and exciting new offers. The studio will continue to:

“Provide our clients with exceptional service in promoting wellness of body, mind and spirit through excellence in instruction and program diversity in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.”

In addition to the outstanding Yoga classes for which they are known, Bliss Studio has also introduced the popular dance based fitness program called Zumba. The classes are exciting, fast paced, and fun with outstanding Latin and international music. A Zumba workout combines fast and slow rhythms and resistance training to tone the muscles and burn fat.

The studio's biggest new addition is their Ballroom Dance Program. Instructed by Austrian National Champion 2005 and European World Latin Quarter Finalist Vladimir Velev, the program includes both Latin and Smooth dancing styles for social dancing and competition. OBMSA Member Meeting at Oakcliff Sailing Center Well Attended
Nearly 50 people came out for the Main Street Member Meeting on April 15, at Oakcliff Sailing Center. The meeting began with an introduction by Main Street President Ellen Roché, where she announced the formation of an Advisory Board comprised of community leaders. An overview of work Main Street has done over the past six months was provided by Executive Director Isaac Kremer. Highlights included formation of the Advisory Board, applying for several competitive grants, and implementing the New York Main Street grant that was received. Special events included the Winter Wellness Week in January and the upcoming Oyster Bay Sundown series. Invited guest speakers were David Waldo with The WaterFront Center and Dawn Riley, Executive Director of the Oakcliff Sailing Center who both spoke about work of their respective organizations. Refreshments were provided for the evening, compliments of The Chocolate Lady.

Teaching Studios of Art Announces Sundown Concert and Spring Registration Drive

On Thursday, May 6th, the Teaching Studios of Art will be joining forces with Oyster Bay Main Street Association to host their Sundown Series Kick-Off party. Normally held at an outdoor venue, this party will be in our art studio/classrooms and feature an art show of student and faculty work, as well as the live musical performances of John Bruschini’s nylon string guitar and Dale Kleps’ flute. Light food and drinks will also be served.

Faculty will be available for discussion of their respective courses, and students may register for next session throughout the event.

We are in the middle of our registration drive for Spring Session 2.

Both faculty and student artwork will be on display during the Sundown event.

We invite you to join us and pursue your artistic growth with some of the New York region's most talented and dedicated faculty. At our school, you will find a program that is rooted in classical training, and is unpretentious in approach.Our students range from the absolute beginner to the more advanced.

Plein Air Landscape Painting Techniques

In this class, students will learn how to render a landscape, starting from its simplest elements and proceeding to finer details and relationships. These will include understanding values, color relationships, perspective, drawing, and different ways of handling pigment. During this course,students will first learn about basic color mixing strategies and different qualities of oil paint and/or acrylics.

Portraiture
Kristin Kunc and Rob Zeller continue to offer two very different, but compatible approaches in Portrait instruction. Rob offers a more anatomical approach, and Kristin a more painterly touch. All model poses last for 7 weeks at the Teaching Studios of Art.

Illustration
Renowned illustrator Susan Gaber joins our staff this session. She has worked as a freelance illustrator at Newsday for 10 years and has illustrated over 24 published books. She will teach Introduction to Illustration on Monday evenings, 6:00pm - 9:00pm. This class will cover the very basics of Illustration in various media: pen and ink, acrylics, and watercolor. If you are trying to build a portfolio of work to pursue a career in Illustration, or simply want to try your hand at the medium, this is a chance to work with a experienced professional.

Children's Classes

This session, we are once again conducting classes for younger artists on Saturday mornings.
Our curriculum focuses on teaching students how to see the basic shapes that make up almost any form. Students then learn how to build more intricate drawings using those shapes. Basic principles of color will be taught, as well. The idea is to set the stage for participation in our more advanced young adult/portfolio class.

Oyster Bay Sundown
A live music series is being planned again this year for downtown Oyster Bay. Three restaurants: Canterbury’s,Fiddleheads, and The Homestead are all arranging to have live music every Thursday night. Live outdoor music will be provided the 1st Thursday of each month at Renaissance Plaza (24 Audrey Avenue) on June 3, July 1, & August 5, from 7-9pm each night. The kick-off for Oyster Bay Sundown will be held on May 3 at the Teaching Studios of Art to coincide with their spring registration drive. The last concert will be September 2 at The Homestead. These concerts are free and open to the public.

Welcome to the 2010 Oyster Bay Art Walk! Please join us the 1st Thursday of each month from 7-9pm in Historic Oyster Bay. Our walk features an international spectrum of contemporary artists, displaying their work at several downtown locations. Many businesses and sites throughout the town will be displaying artwork. Many restaurants also will be exhibiting art and offering a percentage off on meals, wine tastings, and more. Live entertainment will take place, and restaurants and cafes will be open for coffee and dessert.

Kristin Künc Classes at the Teaching Studios of Art, March 8 - May 1

The Portrait: Instruction by Demonstration

Tuesdays 6:00pm - 9:00pm

This unique class is built around a simple concept: Watch a great artist at work, and try to emulate what she does.

Kristin Künc excels at working from the live model. While serious in her approach, she tries to cultivate an enthusiastic atmosphere that is welcoming for the beginner. She demonstrates, in a very slow and methodical manner, a traditional approach to portrait painting. At variously scheduled intervals, she breaks from working and critiques student's attempts to work in a similar manner. It takes a special talent to instruct students individually and execute a beautiful portrait painting simultaneously. Künc has grown a loyal following because she that unique ability.

$340 for 8 weeks, with a discount for taking more than one class. Kristin did this painting of Kate, as well as the portrait above, during class as a demonstration for her students.


Classical Drawing and Painting
still lifes and plaster casts

Tuesdays, 2:00pm - 5:00pm

This class represents the very core of what we try to achieve at the Teaching Studios of Art. Künc teaches the foundations of great Realism by helping students become better draftsmen and painters. It is meant for beginners, or for artists who have had some training, but would like to brush up on technique with a professional.

Künc patiently guides students through the fundamentals of drawing by utilizing plaster casts and a method of drawing that she learned from Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier.

For still life painting, Künc encourages students to bring in objects they love and find beauty in. Students then carefully plan out a composition that is aesthetically pleasing, and begin to paint with a full palette, using both earth and prismatic colors.

Oyster Bay's Teaching Studios of Art Announces Spring Term, Starting March 8

Registration is now open for the Spring Session 1 at the Teaching Studios of Art.


In just 8 short months, we have become one of the most exciting places to study art in the New York metro area. We invite you to join us and pursue your artistic growth with some of the region's most talented and dedicated faculty. We aim to foster an environment that is rooted in classical training, and is unpretentious in approach.

Color
This session, we welcome new faculty member Patricia Lind, who will teach “A Course in Color”, Thursdays 10:00am-1:00pm. The class will explore color concepts and practical mixing of oil paint as handed down from generation to generation by several great artists, from Michael Aviano to Frank Reilly.


Portraiture


Kristin Kunc and Rob Zeller continue to offer two very different, but compatible approaches in Portrait instruction. Rob offers a more anatomical approach, and Kristin a more painterly touch. All model poses last for 8 weeks at the Teaching Studios of Art.

New Art Studio/School Aims to Energize Local Arts Community; Art Equinox 2009

On Thursday, August 27 Town Clerk Steven L. Labriola participated in a ribbon cutting
ceremony to commemorate the opening of Oyster Bay’s latest addition to its community, the Teaching Studios of Art. For their next community event, Rob Zeller, Director of the Teaching Studios of Arts and his faculty are hosting Art Equinox 2009, an art and music reception at the Studio, located at 115 Audrey Avenue on Friday, September 25 from 7 pm to 10 pm. Light refreshments will be served. The aim of this event is to highlight the art work of students and faculty, and to raise the profile of the school in the North Shore community.

The Teaching Studios of Arts joins L’Industrie Skateboards and the Railroad Museum on Audrey Avenue which may soon become known as the "artsy" end of town. Bill Burke, Organization Committee Chair of the Oyster Bay Main Street Association said, "SOHO has come to Oyster Bay. Teaching Studios is a powerful affirmation of Main Street's decade-long commitment to revitalize the historic Hamlet of Oyster Bay, relying on its unique assets and strengths including history, arts, and culture."

Rob Zeller, Director of the Teaching Studios of Art, is no stranger to the arts community in Oyster Bay having previously taught at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Art, which was once also located in Oyster Bay. “Oyster Bay has a great deal of charm that is very attractive to artists like myself. From the pristine waterfront to the beautiful architecture, a human-scale downtown, access to the LIRR, and, of course, the rich history that is so much a part of this community. This town has all the elements to make it an ideal hub for an arts community and I hope the school will be instrumental in making that happen,” said, Zeller has also taught at the New York Academy of Art and the Long Island Academy of Fine Art and has exhibited his works in
galleries in New York City and across the country. Zeller received a BFA from the Boston Museum School and Tufts University, and an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. He studied with Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier and is the recipient of two Posey Fellowships and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.


The Teaching Studios of Art began soon after Zeller started teaching landscape lessons in Central Park. When it became too cold to paint outside in winter, Zeller moved the classes indoors to an art studio in Brooklyn and thus was the birth of the first Teaching Studio of Art. The new studio in Oyster Bay is the second campus for the school.

The mission of The Teaching Studios of Art is to train artists in traditional techniques practiced for centuries before the advent of Modernism. Zeller and his fellow teachers equip students of all ages with the strengths of time-tested techniques and believe that creating a vibrant artistic environment enriches the aesthetic and cultural life of the surrounding community. "By focusing our efforts on training artists in traditional techniques that are sometimes difficult to master, we feel we are offering a chance for personal improvement as well as artistic growth. Our faculty is comprised of highly trained and skilled artists who have exhibited their work in New York and around the US. Our classes are small, and students receive much personal attention. Our clients are our community, and we take their needs seriously," said Zeller.

To fulfill this mission and to begin building a community of local artists, Zeller has aligned the Studio with highly acclaimed artists to serve as faculty. Instructor Kristin Künc’s latest painting, Owl was featured on the most recent invitation of the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center Gala Ball and was purchased by Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, at the Gala’s auction. Künc graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, studied portraiture with Joanette and Cedric Egeli and impressionistic landscape painting at the Cape Cod School of Art. After teaching at the John Waldron Arts Center in Indiana, Künc moved to New York to study with Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier. She was awarded a full fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center and the National Society of Arts and Letters' Career Award.

Instructor Bennett Vadnais studied classical drawing and painting at the Bougie Studio, MN, the Water Street Atelier in NY and the Art Students League of New York. He won the highest honors that the League awards, He also taught at the Long Island Academy of Fine Art and has done various landscape workshops around Long Island. Vadnais’ work has exhibited in galleries in New York City and across the country.

Instructor Nan Carey has a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has been an art instructor at Wave Hill in the Bronx and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Her work is exhibited and collected in the metropolitan area and beyond.

The immensely talented North Shore pastel artist Jane McGraw Teubner has won numerous
awards for her pastel paintings in the last few years, most notably from the Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Pastel Society of America.

Internationally renowned artist John Morra, a leading figure in the world of contemporary American realism, will be teaching a Still-Life class. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Graduate study brought Morra to New York, where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the New York Academy of Art in 1991. Morra has taught workshops on a regular basis at the Gage Academy in Seattle, Washington, and also the Grand Central Academy in New York City. Morra taught in Provence, France this summer.
