Pearls of Oyster Bay Award Winners Announced

The “Pearl of Oyster Bay” was awarded to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site this week, one of 19 sites in the area elected by the community as a "Pearl of Oyster Bay". Sagamore Hill, family home of President Theodore Roosevelt, was designated a unit of the National Park Service System in 1962 and welcomes more than 50,000 visitors from the community and around the world who visit the Roosevelt Home and grounds each year.

Accepting the award on behalf of Sagamore Hill NHS are Thomas E. Ross, Superintendent and Sherry Justus, Chief of Interpretation, Visitor Services and Natural Resources. Pictured above left to right are Jerelyn Hanrahan, Artist of the Graduated Pearls Project , Sherry Justus, Tom Ross and Tracy Dellomo, Graduated Pearl Committee Member and Board Member of the Oyster Bay Main Street Association.

The sculpture project now has an underwriting sponsor, Superior Concrete of Brooklyn owned by local resident Constance Cincotta. The 20x40 foot pearl necklace sculpture will be cast in concrete supplied by Superior Concrete. The project has also been funded by an initial grant by the Oyster Bay Main Street Association and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Other sites receiving recognition as "Pearls of the Community" in addition to Sagamore Hill, include The Waterfront, and Friends of the Bay. More "Pearls of the Community" still await to be announced.

Jerelyn Hanrahan is an American artist who has lived and traveled extensively in Europe. She has recently returned to her original medium of painting, through a series of enamel paintings on carton paper.

Her drawings have been exhibited in the Aargau Kunsthaus, In Switzerland, the Venice Pavillion in Venice, Italy, and Beijing, China. In 2009, her drawing series Schwarz Blumen ( Black Flowers ) represented by Pierogi 2000 Gallery were exhibited at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Her drawings were also in an exhibition Aquarelle, at the Rohmer Apoteke Gallery in Zurich, and two solo exhibitions at Rolf Muller, Art Magazin in Zurich, and an exhibition entitled Gestures at Galerie Francesca Pia in Bern, Switzerland.

In 1997 Andrea Zust published a book of 97 drawings by Ms, Hanrahan entitled Notations On A Trek, with three poems by British poet Max Blagg. A reading by the poet was at The Drawing Center in New York, and at Atelier Studio / Fine Arts in Oyster Bay. Jerelyn Hanrahan runs her professional studio in Oyster Bay where she is currently completing a public sculpture entitled Graduated Pearls.



Fleur Palau is an American artist trained in both New York and Florence, Italy.

Ms. Palau has lived in Italy for over 20 years, where she has drawn inspiration for her work.

The rabbit series is whimsical, yet sometimes a moody reflection of the human psyche. The full-meaning of these paintings is of course open to speculation, though the artist recognizes the use of symbolism as a vehicle to reveal useful messages about ourselves. Ms. Palau's work has been exhibited widly in Italy, and the United States, and is represented by The Three Graces Gallery, Portsmouth, NH; The Millbrook Gallery, Concord, NH; The Kevin Milligan Gallery in Danville, California; and J. Todd Galleries in Massachusetts. Recent exhibitions include The Portsmouth Museum of Art; The Human Animal in the Millbrook Gallery, N.H.; Four Legged, The Three Graces Gallery, Tulipomania, N.H.; and The Childrens Museum of NH in Dover, University of Dover in Portland, Maine.

Monotype artist Lisa P. Oswald of Monroe, CT is exhibiting a collection of her monotypes at Shangri-la Spa, 63 Audrey Avenue, in Oyster Bay, NY through February 17, 2011. The exhibit, called "The Body Serene: Monotypes by Lisa P. Oswald," features a collection of ten contemporary interpretations of the figure (the art is available for sale). Work of Ken Butler on Display at Atelier this Thursday

Ken Butler is an artist and musician whose Hybrid musical instruments, performances,
collage drawings, and installations explore the interaction and transformation of common and uncommon objects, altered images, sounds and silence.
The artist-musician performs mesmerizing world textures and driving melodic gypsy
grooves with passion and purpose on an amazing arsenal of amplified hybrid string
instruments made from household objects and tools. He has performed with John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, Butch Morris, The Soldier
String Quartet, Matt Darriau's Paradox Trio, The Tonight Show Band, and The Master
Gnawa musicians of Morocco. His CD, Voices of Anxious Objects is on Zorn’s Tzadik
label. Works by Ken Butler are represented in public and private collections in Portland,
Seattle, Vail, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, Washington, and New York
Including the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts 30th Anniversary Gala features Oyster Bay artist Jerelyn Hanrahan

Oyster Bay, New York - Jerelyn Hanrahan , a professional artist who runs her studio Atelier, Studio / Fine Arts located in the Oyster Bay Hamlet was selected to install Nite Out for the 30th Anniversary of the Tilles Center.

The artist worked on the fabrication of this public art installation with local businnesses such as Sagamore Autobody , using their premises and expertise to prepare and paint the 30 foot strand of cast acrylic pearls. The artist also worked with East Norwich Dry Cleaners for the fabrication of a 15 foot mans shirt.

Nite Out celebrates the anticipation and excitement one experiences when preparing and dressing to attend an evening of culture.

Oyster Bay's Art Scene is Starting to Gain Attention - LI Pulse

Oyster Bay Sundown
A live music series is being planned again this year for downtown Oyster Bay. Three restaurants: Canterbury’s,Fiddleheads, and The Homestead are all arranging to have live music every Thursday night. Live outdoor music will be provided the 1st Thursday of each month at Renaissance Plaza (24 Audrey Avenue) on June 3, July 1, & August 5, from 7-9pm each night. The kick-off for Oyster Bay Sundown will be held on May 3 at the Teaching Studios of Art to coincide with their spring registration drive. The last concert will be September 2 at The Homestead. These concerts are free and open to the public.
