Despite the rain, the Oyster Bay Main Street Association's 

Second Annual Yuletide Church Walk was a great success!

Oyster Bay, New York - So many participants braved the rain to join us for the first leg of our journey, which began in St. Dominic's R.C. Chapel.  Participants began the tour seated in the pews learning a brief history of the church and its connection to the well known resident of Oyster Bay - Louis C. Tiffany.

Pieces all over the church have been examined by experts and almost conclusively determined to be the work of Tiffany, from its interior windows to the elaborate alter at the front of the church.  As the tour went on, participants were invited to take a closer look of the alter and even to venture to the balcony to take a closer look at - and play a few chords on - the church's beautiful organ.

We then made our way down the hill to our second stop of the trip - Christ Church of Oyster Bay.  The amazing thing about these churches is that despite their close proximity the architecture varies so drastically.  Upon entering Christ Church, participants were given a quick history of the church and shown several photographs of the church buildings that had stood on the site prior to the present one. The church's ties to Theodore Roosevelt and his family were also highlighted with several drawings and photographs from the President's funeral on display and perhaps most significantly the original pew where Roosevelt sat during his Sunday masses is still in tact.  Our gracious hosts also explained to the crowd the importance of the lay out of the church, which is in that of a cross, as well as the importance of the stories told in the stained glass windows.

As we made our way to the final destination - The First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay - our group had noticeably grown in number.  Upon arrival, we were treated to a presentation and question and answer session by Pastor Jeffrey Prey on the history and architecture of this beautiful building, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.  Following Pastor Prey's talk, the Mount Olive Baptist Church's Gospel Choir took to the stage and regaled the crowd with several selections from their repertoire.  The music was breathtaking and a perfect way to bring this years Yuletide Church Walk to a close.

Oyster Bay is fortunate to have a number of different churches, each with its own distinctive architecture and history.  And we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to learn about and see these historic gems up close, with holiday decorations and spirit at their most festive!

2 pm - Our Journey begins as St. Dominic's Chapel

93 Anstice Street

Where we will learn about the history and design of this beautiful chapel, which was first built in 1897.

2:30 pm - We head down the hill to Christ Church

61 East Main Street

Where a short film highlighting the history of the church and its ties to President Roosevelt and his family will be shown from 2:45 to 3:15,

including a Q & A session.

3:15 pm - We then process to The First Presbyterian Church

60 East Main Street

Where we will learn about the architecture and history of the 1873 chapel, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

3:30 pm - Mount Olive Baptist Church's Mass Choir

As a grand finale, the 15 member choir of Mount Olive Baptist will perform gospel and holiday songs for the crowd.  This is an opportunity that is not to be missed!

4:45 pm - Annual Oyster Bay Tree Lighting

Following the concert, we will take a short walk along Audrey Avenue and end our journey at the Annual Oyster Bay Tree Lighting Ceremony with free refreshments available for all!

This event is free and participants are welcome to join us at any point along the way.

Dancing in the Street Happening in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay!

FIRST NIGHT OF “DANCING IN THE STREET”ATTRACTS LARGE CROWD

Oyster Bay, NY—On Friday evening, July 11, under a full moon, the streets in downtown Oyster Bay around the Bandstand were transformed into an inviting dance floor.  The Oyster Bay Main Street Association kicked off their fourth season of “Dancing in the Street,” once again sponsored by BMW of Oyster Bay.  More than 130 participants, of all ages and all levels of dancing ability, both singles and couples, took to the street as the music filled the summer night air.  DJ Louis del Prete, back again by popular demand, played and sang all types of songs, from Latin to rock, from the crooners of the 40s right up to today’s hip-hop artists.  His line dance instruction had everyone bounding out of their chairs to get a spot on the floor.  It was an evening of fun for all.

OBMSA Promotions Chair Diane Meltzer announced that this free event is one of the organization’s community building/downtown revitalization efforts.  They will continue for the next two Fridays, July 18 and 25, from 7-9 p.m.

Main Street Association Invites Public to Free Downtown Events

Oyster Bay, NY—Dust off your dancing shoes!  The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is thrilled to announce the return of “Dancing in the Street,” a series of free dance evenings on the streets of historic, charming Oyster Bay.

Following on the success of last year’s “Dancing in the Street,” OBMSA is calling dancers of all ages, skills, and styles—even those with two left feet—to come out for delightful evenings of pure fun under the stars.  Once again, BMW of Oyster Bay has most graciously offered to sponsor the entire series.  And—like last year—they plan to bring several of their newest model cars to put on display for everyone’s viewing pleasure.

Mark your calendars now for the four Fridays in July:  Friday, July 4^th (we’ll kick off [literally!] the holiday weekend); Friday, July 11^th ; Friday, July 18^th; and Friday, July 25^th.  The hours are 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., on Audrey Avenue around the Bandstand.  Bring a chair if desired.

Music and dance instructions will be provided by several of Long Island’s most popular DJs/Dancers.  All steps are geared for singles and couples alike. 

Mark James will take the lead on July 4^th.  Hailed as “United States Champion” & “Dance Teacher of the Year,” and assisted by Karen Lupo, “United States Latin & Rhythm Finalist,” this couple are full time professionals who also have a large following on Long Island.  They will be gracing the stage (also known as the street) on July 4^th and 18^th.  They have been featured performers at many dance competitions and fundraisers, and on PBS.  From Salsa to Hustle, from elegant to upbeat, with some Sinatra, Pop, and Swing thrown in—Mark will wow you with his style and quickly inspire you to join in.

Louis del Prete is extremely popular and we are thrilled to welcome him back to our town on July 11^th  and 25^th.  Not only is Louis an excellent ballroom dancer and teacher, but he is also a talented musician and singer! At one time he taught dance on well known cruise lines, and now he teaches group and private lessons and runs many dance venues.  For Oyster Bay he will play all types of music from the 1940’s right up to today.  Included will be line dancing, Latin music, ballroom, and any other style desired.

“Dancing in the Street” is one of the community building/downtown revitalization efforts organized by the Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA).  As Promotion Chair Diane Meltzer commented, “What is there not to like about a starlit night in a beautiful town, good music, and fun dance instructions?  Everyone loves it!”
