Oyster Bay, NY: On Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sagamore Hill National Historic Site will hostChristmas with the Roosevelts at Sagamore Hill. Activities will include holiday music performed on a harp and flute byMusica Dolce, Christmas carols sung by Close Enough, and original and seasonal poems read by the Nassau County Poet Laureate Society. Finally a very special appearance by “Theodore Roosevelt,” as portrayed by James Foote, will share his reminiscences of how the Roosevelts celebrated Christmas at Sagamore Hill and White House. Ranger-guided tours of the Roosevelt Home will feature information about Christmases past and the festivities that the family enjoyed. Complimentary hot cider and cocoa will be provided by the Friends of Sagamore Hill.

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, located at 12 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, New York, is a unit of the National Park Service.  The site was established by Congress in 1962 to preserve and interpret the structures, landscape, collections and other cultural resources associated with Theodore Roosevelt’s home in Oyster Bay, New York, and to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, his family and the significant events associated with him. Tours of the home are limited to fourteen persons and are offered on the hour on Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Tour tickets are five dollars each and tickets are sold on a first-come-first-served basis each day beginning at 9 a.m. NOTE: The Roosevelt Home will be closing to the public for a three year period beginning December 5, 2011 due to a major rehabilitation of the home, however the Visitor Center, Theodore Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard and the grounds will continue to be open and free interpretive programs will be offered.The grounds of Sagamore Hill are open year round from dawn to dusk. Sundown Brings Live Music to Oyster Bay, 1st Thursdays, June to September

The Oyster Bay Main Street Association is excited to announce the line-up for its third “SUNDOWN” Concert Series. Eagerly awaited by residents who enjoyed it the last two years, this year’s entertainment promises to be even more fabulous! Diane Meltzer, Chair of the OBMSA Promotion Committee, said “we are thrilled to be bringing live music to the downtown area for a third year of warm weather outdoor concerts.”

Once again, the acts will coincide with Oyster Bay’s “First Thursday” Art Walk, adding another option for residents and visitors enjoying the gallery exhibits, restaurant specials and general bonhomie on those evenings. SUNDOWN concerts are FREE for everyone, and chairs are provided for your listening pleasure. All concerts are from 7 – 9 p.m. in the evening, and each month will feature something different. Following is a list of this year’s musicians:



June 2— “Johnny Q” electrifies the evening with an eclectic musical journey including everything from Elvis Costello to Bob Dylan. The trio on violin, bass, and drums will put a unique personal twist on favorite songs. — Renaissance Plaza, 24 Audrey Avenue

July 7— “Scofflaws” ska/reggae/R & B are “so hip it’s ridiculous.” Established in 1988, they are based on Long Island but have toured the states extensively doing live gigs. Current members play tenor sax (while doubling as lead vocal), guitar, bass, and drums. — Renaissance Plaza, 24 Audrey Avenue

August 4—“Jack Morelli’s Jazz Duo” delivers a swinging evening under the stars.” Enjoy classic jazz, blues, and songs from the Great American Songbook. Art Rome, on keyboard and vocals, is a master of improvisation and has played on Broadway. Jack Morelli is one of the top drummers anywhere. — Renaissance Plaza, 24 Audrey Avenue

September 1 — “Flashback” has you dancing and singing to the Golden Oldies of the 60’s – 90’s. Long Island’s own “Village People”: retired senior training captain for the NYC Department of Corrections on rhythm guitar/ vocals; several incredible musicians/electricians on guitar/ drums/vocals! Concerts at Christ Church proudly presents a delightful evening of exquisite music by virtuoso lutenist Christopher Morrongiello. A graduate of the Mannes College of Music and University of Oxford, Dr. Morrongiello has been actively promoting the lute and its repertoire in concerts, recordings, and even academic journals for more than fifteen years. He has performed for HRM Queen of England and was a prizewinner in the BBC Radio Two Young Musician of the Year Competition. He performs on an authentic gut-strung Renaissance lute, and gives an account of this beautiful instrument’s fascinating history, cultural significance, and playing technique.

Main Street Announces Second Sundown Music Concerts

Downtown Oyster Bay will again be the place to hear and enjoy live music this summer. Following the enthusiastic response to last summer’s “SUNDOWN” Concert Series, the Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) is ready to roll out the musical red carpet for this year’s events. An exciting and varied mix is planned. Diane Meltzer, Chair of the OBMSA Promotion Committee, said “we are thrilled to be bringing live music to the downtown area for a second year of warm weather outdoor concerts.”

The main focus will be on the “First Thursday” of each month, 7-9 p.m., from May through September. To enhance the Art Walks that are already in place on “First Thursdays”--with their wonderful gallery exhibits, wine tastings, restaurant specials, and general bonhomie--live outdoor music will add another option for residents’ and visitors’ entertainment.

Each month will feature something different. The season kicks off on May 6th at the Teaching Studios of Art, 115 Audrey Avenue, where the OBMSA will host a get-together open to the public, which will coincide with the Studios’ new registration period. In an acoustic setting, John Bruschini’s nylon string guitar and Dale Kleps’ flute and reeds will present fresh interpretations of traditional jazz and classical music, mainly from Argentina, Brazil, and the U.S. The sound will compliment the classical art being taught and on display. Refreshments and drinks will be served.

The June 3rd, July 1st, and August 5th concerts will take place at Renaissance Plaza, in the courtyard on Audrey Avenue behind Chrison & Bellina at 24 Audrey Avenue. In case of rain, the music will set up at Atelier/Fine Arts, 9 East Main Street. Bring along a chair and supper if desired.

June 3rd will showcase Tom Licameli, a guitarist and songwriter of the Indie rock band “Knockout Drops” from New York City, and producer of their 2005 rock n’ roll theatre show Escape from Bellevue. For Oyster Bay, Tom will deliver a solo acoustic act of rock n’ roll classics, Beatles favorites, the Who, the Byrds, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Radiohead, and other contemporary greats.

July 1st will herald the Independence Day weekend with the jazzy return of John Bruschini and Dale Kleps as the “Downtown Earth Duo;” this time playing electric guitar and tenor saxophone, respectively.

Bruschini’s compositions will combine improvisation and spontaneity into 20th century jazz tunes and 21st century hot numbers.

August 5th is the date for “Acoustifunk.” This dynamic acoustic duo—Matt Sweeney and Greg Romano singing and playing guitar—present their unique take on classics by the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Van Morrison, Marvin Gaye, and others. The audience just might turn the courtyard into a dance floor!

September 2nd concludes the series with a bang! The Homestead outdoor patio, 107 South Street—site of last summer’s “Judy Garland Revue”—this summer will be the site for singing sensation Don Anthony and his Songs of the Stars. Reserve a table for dinner or just sit on a lounge and order a drink, while this professional entertainer wows the ladies (and the gents) with his renditions of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Bobby Darin, Elvis, and who knows who else?! He’s played everywhere except Vegas—so far—and now The Homestead!!

Historic Oyster Bay will be your musical destination this coming Thursday, August 6, from 6pm to 8pm, and Il Piatto Restaurant will be your stage for the Judy Garland Revue as part of the ongoing Oyster Bay Sundown series held every Thursday night


The trio of Jen Kane, Lisa Berman, and Dawn Klein will present the life of Judy Garland through song.

Jen Kane describes herself as a lifelong fan of Judy Garland, even as a young child. Past credits include Meet me In St. Louis, Pippin, Swing and Anything Goes.

Dawn Klein teaches fourth grade at the American Sign Language and English Lower School in Manhattan and dance at Dance Dimensions in Hicksville. She too has performed in productions of Anything Goes, Hello Dolly, and Gypsy.

Finally, Lisa Berman performs in everything from children’s shows to plays to big musicals. She too is delighted to perform the Garland repertoire.

Holidays in Oyster Bay Activities Announced

Oyster Bay plans to be a festive destination and full of activity this holiday season. In the weeks ahead decorations will go up on the bandstand and along the streets.

A full schedule of events is planned as well, starting on Thursday, December 4th. As part of the First Thursdays promotion, participating stores will stay open until 8pm. Special entertainment and retail promotions will entice people to visit downtown.

Events Occurring Downtown
Free horse and carriage rides will be available the first two Saturdays of December from noon-4pm. These will leave the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum Preview Center at 102 Audrey Ave and are on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 6, at 4:15pm. This traditional holiday event will include singing, a reading of The Night Before Christmas, and lighting of a large holiday tree in the park by the Derby-Hall Bandstand. John Canning will reprise his role as Master of Ceremonies, and performers from area schools will lead the audience in singing of carols. Refreshments will be served.

YogaRocks! will offer a free class, "Yoga for a Street Free Holiday Season" on December 8, at 7:30pm. Five essential techniques for relieving stress and achieving inner peace will be taught. YogaRocks! is located in downtown Oyster Bay at 127 South Street.

The annual Chanukah Menorah Lighting will be held Wednesday, December 17 at 5:30pm by the Derby-Hall Bandstand across from Town Hall. Rabbi Demant of the Oyster Bay Jewish Center will lead lighting of the candles. He will be joined by singers from the Jewish Center. Refreshments will be served.

Area historical attractions will be featured Saturday, December 13. Raynham Hall Museum (20 West Main Street) plans a “Meet Mrs. Claus” event from 11am-1pm with storytelling, goodies, and a small take-home present. Cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Special Holiday Performances Planned
The 7th Annual HPS Benefit Christmas Concert will be held in the Oyster Bay Performing Arts Center at Oyster Bay High School on Friday, December 5th at 7:30pm. The Long Island musical group "J" will feature the music of JoAnn Criblez and John DiGennaro. The concert is free though any donations collected will help benefit people with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS). For more information visit www.hpsnetwork.org.

A second concert will be provided by the choir of the Hood AME Zion Church (corner of South and Summit Streets) on December 13 starting at 4pm. A reception will follow, hosted by the Oyster Bay Historical Society at the nearby Earle-Wightman House (20 Summit Street).

Carriage rides will again be available from noon-4pm on Saturday, December 13. Later that evening from 6pm to 8pm carolers will stroll throughout the downtown and nearby neighborhoods, spreading holiday cheer.

Another concert will be held on Sunday, December 14 at 3pm in Christ Church (61 East Main Street). The Long Island Baroque Ensemble will present their annual holiday concert with music from different cultures and heritage. This will be performed by singers accompanied by an array of Renaissance instruments. Cost is $20 for general admission, $15 for senior citizens, $10 for students, and free for children under six.
