With the holiday season upon us, we want to stress the importance of shopping locally to support our local business owners, who are our friends and neighbors, and to support the downtown as a whole.  According to the 3/50 Project for "every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures."  It was encouraging to see the success of American Express' Small Business Saturday as well as that of the Holiday Market set up by our Chamber of Commerce during the Christmas tree lighting last weekend.  We would love to see this trend continue throughout the holiday season!

We do, however, understand that many supporters of Oyster Bay do not live locally and so, we wanted to let you know of an opportunity to give back to our community while shopping online - not only now, but all year long.  Amazon.com has created the AmazonSmile Foundation and has pledged to donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to the Oyster Bay Main Street Association so that we can continue our mission of revitalizing the downtown.

Oyster Bay is fortunate to have a number of different churches, each with its own distinctive architecture and history.  And we are pleased to offer you the opportunity to learn about and see these historic gems up close, with holiday decorations and spirit at their most festive!

2 pm - Our Journey begins as St. Dominic's Chapel

93 Anstice Street

Where we will learn about the history and design of this beautiful chapel, which was first built in 1897.

2:30 pm - We head down the hill to Christ Church

61 East Main Street

Where a short film highlighting the history of the church and its ties to President Roosevelt and his family will be shown from 2:45 to 3:15,

including a Q & A session.

3:15 pm - We then process to The First Presbyterian Church

60 East Main Street

Where we will learn about the architecture and history of the 1873 chapel, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

3:30 pm - Mount Olive Baptist Church's Mass Choir

As a grand finale, the 15 member choir of Mount Olive Baptist will perform gospel and holiday songs for the crowd.  This is an opportunity that is not to be missed!

4:45 pm - Annual Oyster Bay Tree Lighting

Following the concert, we will take a short walk along Audrey Avenue and end our journey at the Annual Oyster Bay Tree Lighting Ceremony with free refreshments available for all!

This event is free and participants are welcome to join us at any point along the way.

Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at Planting Fields, Fri, 12/9, 5:30pm

The New York Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the seventh Annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay, NY.

The tree lighting will take place on Friday, December 9, 2011. Arboretum gates will open at 5:30PM and the tree lighting will take place at 6:00PM sharp. As in previous years, we will light the magnificent thirty-five foot Japanese Umbrella Pine, which is located on the south side of the Camilla Greenhouse. The event will feature several special guests, including Santa and carolers. Guests will have the opportunity to view the first floor of Coe Hall. In addition, guests will be able to view the spectacular poinsettia display in the Main Greenhouse. The Main Greenhouse display will feature several hundred poinsettia plants comprising forty varieties of poinsettias. Don’t forget to visit our beautiful Periwinkles café in the Visitor Center and enjoy a great snack.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see Planting Fields in all its’ winter splendor. Both the grounds and the building will be open until 8:00PM. Admission is free. Celebrate the Holidays in Downtown Oyster Bay!

Oyster Bay is about to have the most active and exciting holiday season in recent memory. Community leaders and public officials will be on-hand to mark completion of the $2.5 million rehabilitation of the Octagon Hotel on Thursday, December 2. This 1850's building, where Theodore Roosevelt conducted his campaign for Governor of New York, will house 6 apartments and 3 retail units. Join us for the Ribbon Cutting & Dedication at 4pm, to be followed by building tours and reception with free food and drink. The Octagon Hotel is located at 67 West Main Street in downtown Oyster Bay.

Meet the Maker: Jane Cairns Irvine at Think Long Island First, 5pm-7pm
Renowned glass artist Jane Cairns Irvine will present her glass art at Think Long Island First at 36 Audrey Avenue. Jane runs a successful studio in Glen Head where she creates her own work and introduces students of all ages to the magic of fused glass.

1st Annual Holiday Stroll and Artwalk, 7pm-9pm
Enjoy a stroll through town and visit many of our artists and art galleries that will be open late to satisfy your holiday shopping needs.

Rob Zeller of the Teaching Studios of Art at 115 Audrey Avenue will be conducting a portrait demonstration form a live model, 7pm-9pm. The event is free and open to the public. Artwork of faculty artists Kristin Künc, Bennett Vadnais, Lor Shorin and Jane McGraw Teubner will be on display, as well.

Shangri-la Spa at 63 Audrey Avenue will be hosting a "Meet the Artist Reception" from 7-9pm. A collection of original monotypes and hand-pulled prints, all modern interpretations of the figure, will be on display now through Feb. 18.

Artwork from local area artists will be on display in the Oyster Bay Main Street Association storefront office at 17 Audrey Ave, from 7pm-9pm. Free holiday food and refreshments will be provided.

Rides will depart every 15 minutes on a first come, first served basis from the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, 102 Audrey Avenue.

Meet St. Nicholas, 12:30pm-2:30pm
St. Nicholas will make a special trip from the North Pole to greet guests at Raynham Hall Museum, located at 20 West Main Street. Children who come with their families will receive stocking stuffer gifts and holiday refreshments. Admission is $12 per family.

Oyster Bay Historical Society Holiday Open House, 4pm-7pm
A program of gospel and seasonal music will be held at the Hood A.M.E. Zion Church located at 137 South Street. This will be followed by a Holiday Reception at the Oyster Bay Historical Society building, located at 20 Summit Street in Oyster Bay.

The Artist Club Gallery Opening, doors open at 2pm, reception 7pm-9pm
The newly opened Artist Club Gallery at 27 Berry Hill Road will have an exhibition featuring work by artists Michael Cavayero, Kathryn Gardner, Odile Montel, and Peter Weeks. This is a "silent auction" gallery where club memebrs can bid for work in person, by phone, or online.

Christmas with the Roosevelts at Sagamore Hill, noon-4pm
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site will host Christmas with the Roosevelts. Activities will include holiday music performed on a harp and flute by Musica Dolce at the park’s Old Orchard Museum and Christmas carols sung by Close Enough around Roosevelt Home. “Theodore Roosevelt,” as portrayed by James Foote, will share his reminiscences of how the Roosevelts celebrated Christmas, both at Sagamore Hill and in the White House. Ranger-guided tours of the Roosevelt Home will feature information about Christmases past and the festivities that the family enjoyed. Behind the Visitor Center, children will have an opportunity to work with a park ranger to make holiday crafts, and everyone is welcome to partake of complimentary hot cider and hot chocolate will be provided by the Friends of Sagamore Hill. 12 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, New York. Holidays in Oyster Bay Activities Announced

Oyster Bay plans to be a festive destination and full of activity this holiday season. In the weeks ahead decorations will go up on the bandstand and along the streets.

A full schedule of events is planned as well, starting on Thursday, December 4th. As part of the First Thursdays promotion, participating stores will stay open until 8pm. Special entertainment and retail promotions will entice people to visit downtown.

Events Occurring Downtown
Free horse and carriage rides will be available the first two Saturdays of December from noon-4pm. These will leave the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum Preview Center at 102 Audrey Ave and are on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 6, at 4:15pm. This traditional holiday event will include singing, a reading of The Night Before Christmas, and lighting of a large holiday tree in the park by the Derby-Hall Bandstand. John Canning will reprise his role as Master of Ceremonies, and performers from area schools will lead the audience in singing of carols. Refreshments will be served.

YogaRocks! will offer a free class, "Yoga for a Street Free Holiday Season" on December 8, at 7:30pm. Five essential techniques for relieving stress and achieving inner peace will be taught. YogaRocks! is located in downtown Oyster Bay at 127 South Street.

The annual Chanukah Menorah Lighting will be held Wednesday, December 17 at 5:30pm by the Derby-Hall Bandstand across from Town Hall. Rabbi Demant of the Oyster Bay Jewish Center will lead lighting of the candles. He will be joined by singers from the Jewish Center. Refreshments will be served.

Area historical attractions will be featured Saturday, December 13. Raynham Hall Museum (20 West Main Street) plans a “Meet Mrs. Claus” event from 11am-1pm with storytelling, goodies, and a small take-home present. Cost is $8 for members and $10 for non-members.

Special Holiday Performances Planned
The 7th Annual HPS Benefit Christmas Concert will be held in the Oyster Bay Performing Arts Center at Oyster Bay High School on Friday, December 5th at 7:30pm. The Long Island musical group "J" will feature the music of JoAnn Criblez and John DiGennaro. The concert is free though any donations collected will help benefit people with Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS). For more information visit www.hpsnetwork.org.

A second concert will be provided by the choir of the Hood AME Zion Church (corner of South and Summit Streets) on December 13 starting at 4pm. A reception will follow, hosted by the Oyster Bay Historical Society at the nearby Earle-Wightman House (20 Summit Street).

Carriage rides will again be available from noon-4pm on Saturday, December 13. Later that evening from 6pm to 8pm carolers will stroll throughout the downtown and nearby neighborhoods, spreading holiday cheer.

Another concert will be held on Sunday, December 14 at 3pm in Christ Church (61 East Main Street). The Long Island Baroque Ensemble will present their annual holiday concert with music from different cultures and heritage. This will be performed by singers accompanied by an array of Renaissance instruments. Cost is $20 for general admission, $15 for senior citizens, $10 for students, and free for children under six.

Holidays in Oyster Dinner Fundraiser to be held Nov. 3

Festive and sparkling. That's the vision for downtown Oyster Bay for residents and visitors throughout the holiday season.

The Light Up the Holidays Dinner Fundraiser will be held at Wild Honey on Monday, November 3 at 7pm. Guests will be treated to a delicious four-course meal. A silent auction and raffle will add excitement to the festivities. Favors will also be provided for guests from The Chocolate Lady - a chocolaterie that recently opened on Audrey Ave.

Proceeds will go towards purchasing an additional thirty snowflake lights to be hung on lamp posts lining Audrey Ave and poles leading into town. Remaining funds will go towards special holiday activities the first three Saturdays of December in Oyster Bay.

Options are available for those wishing to be sponsors or purchase tickets to the event. A gift of $1,000 or $2,000 will give five free tickets the dinner and an opportunity for a logo and name to be placed on the cover of all publications. A gift of $250 will give two free tickets to the dinner and display of the donors name in publications.

For those wishing to just attend the dinner and not interested in sponsorship options, tickets are still available for $100 apiece.
